This unassuming propane tank is more than meets the eye. It was once the centerpiece for an epic drum circle at the third annual Wakarusa Festival. Right outside the bathhouse near the swimming beach, there amassed a gathering of people with drums. Then those without drums decided to arm themselves with rocks and other instruments of noise making and started banging on this tank and other objects nearby. A rhythm developed and people started dancing.
Only memories now remain of the Wakarusa Festival in Lawrence, KS. After only five years of calling itself home at beautiful Clinton Lake, the festival was moved to Arkansas. It will live on forever for those of us fortunate enough to have been living in Lawrence and only had to drive down the road to enter a whole different world. Besides our memories, this propane tank still remains, and probably a jar or two or Rot Gut somewhere in the woods.
