Fishing at Sunset
With the intention of getting some great sunset photos over the lake, it’s fun to find other things, things you weren’t really expecting to photograph, to make interesting compositions.
I got to the lake a little late and missed the sun actually setting. Timing is crucial! Anyways, there were other interesting things to go along with the colorful sky. In this image, I chose to silhouette the fisherman and show the reflecting colors of the sky on the water. I probably should have gotten this guys’ permission to photograph him, but he was kind of busy and it’s not like I had a 400mm zoom lens pointed at him.

Foggy Sunrise
With my regular wide-angle lens out of commission for the time being, I took out the little-used kit lens for this shot.
Looking for a new location to shoot the sunrise, I came across an intersection south of Clinton Lake. The fog was heavy and gave a sort of ominous feel to the landscape. There were not too many objects to use as a foreground element, but I spotted some haybales that I figured would add a bit of interest. I then snapped off three bracketed exposures to capture this sunrise.

Sunset Reflection
The Kansas River, taken from the northeast side, reflecting at sunset.
As my family and I were returning from a Halloween parade, two towns over, I wanted to stop and shoot some of the beautiful fall colors. I couldn’t find a great place to pull over on the side of the highway, so I waited until I got back to Lawrence and stopped by the river. It happened to be right around sunset so I decided to see what there was to see around the river. After putting my wide angle lens on and after snapping this bracketed exposure, I received an error message stating the contacts on the lens need to be cleaned. Great. Now this lens doesn’t work anymore…

Taken from the Parade of the Royal Court. There were many dancers and entertainers in the parade this year and this woman gave me two of my better shots from the festival. Looking directly at my camera, I think it helps to isolate her from the rest of the pack you can see in the photo. The noon-time sun didn’t really help out much, either…
I decided to shoot solely with my new Canon 50mm f/1.8 II lens on this day. There are so many great opportunities for photos, perhaps this wasn’t the best day to test a new lens that I’m not familiar with. I missed focus on quite a few shots, but I really enjoy the DOF this lens can produce.

Overlooking Douglas County

Taken from the top level of Well’s Overlook, this image is a bird’s eye view of Douglas County (to the northeast of the overlook). It was very early, the sun had just risen and you can still see a lot of fog rising on top of the little ponds around the countryside. This image is a composite of three varying exposures.

Low Overhead
This image was captured from the top level of Well’s Overlook, looking down onto the second level. The views looking outside of the tower were awesome on this morning, but I also found interest on the inside of the wooden structure. What made this pop for me was the vivid yellow of the sign, the blue paint and the green mossy stuff versus the grain of the aged wood. Oh, and Elena left a message.

Little Shutterbug
Mobile phone image – LG Nexus 4
After allowing me to snap a few photos, my daughter requested she be allowd to snap a few of me. I then took out my phone to make a few snaps of her holding my camera (after checking to make sure it was securly aruond her neck). After importing into Darktable, I corrected some colors and added some split toning to make it more Autumn looking.
